GROUP TOPIC :: CORY ARCANGEL

We, group 6 have decided to devote our time on Cory Archangel. He display his art work not only the basic drawing, music, performance, but also through creativity manipulation and strategy. Also, he is best known for video game modifying, and an artist who connects technology and culture as one.

Cory Arcangel is known for his subversive use of technology to create art. Not only does he re-use raw materials to create new art, he uses them in a manner in which transforms the regular into a vision of mass imagery and pushes the limitations of traditional artwork. “Significant in his practice are pieces like Super Mario Clouds v2k3 (2003), a hacked Super Mario Bros video game transformed into a series of wall projections that show an intense blue sky crossed by slowed down white clouds, an aesthetic reminiscent of Pop Art’s obsession with mass imagery. In another seminal work – I Shot Andy Warhol (2003) – he replaced the targets of a shooting game with Pope John Paul II, Flavor Flav and Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame) to let the player slip into the role of Valerie Solanas, the woman who tried to assassinate Warhol in 1968.”

Cory came to the art world through internet and computer based activities. His natural talents for creating digital worlds have evolved into creating artwork that allows him to explore his technologically inclined mind as well as his intense inclination for subversive art through technology.

Cory Arcangel hacked the Super Mario game and manipulated to bring forth the simplicity. He wants to show us that we are above technology and we should not let technology consume us. By hacking into the system and reprogramming the game, he changed the outcome of the game.

An interesting aspect of Cory’s life includes his diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer. This disease affected his concentration and memory greatly. He focused his energy during treatment on “hyper-structuralist” work. The cancer treatment wiped out his short-term memory for a period of time and he made work that he considered “void of real content”. In 2009 his lymph nodes were removed and he has beaten the disease as far as it seems.

In conclusion, Cory Archangel is a profound artist who wants to reconnect the human society with our culture roots and not let the advance technology to devour us.

MASH UP

Title:: REALITY CHECK

The concept is poverty. I wanted to show the reaction of the privileged life and how their not aware or don’t want to be aware of the poverty around them. The reality is poverty is right around the corner, but I also feel that some underprivileged people shouldn’t just sit there and ask for money either… They should at least try to make an effort and the people who can help should help! In a sense, I just wanted to show the perspective of what the privileged life and underprivileged life can do.

MASH-UP PITCH

I was in the music room at SJSU when the idea struck me. Hunger shall be my main theme, because I love food and I was hungry when I was writing this pitch. I will demonstrate this hunger in the perspective of the rich and underprivileged.

In doing so, there will be two main characters, one rich man and one underprivileged lady and her children begging for food. This will be capture in one scene and I’ll be using though bubbles, signs, and conversation bubbles to get my message across.  It should flow from left to right like a book, but it will also make you think about the other themes that are hidden in the mash up.

This mash-up will represent my style, so I envision it to be simple and straight to the point. The story or theme should be straight to the point, hunger in the world. As for colors, texts, and images, I will tedious but bold. It will be illustrated in numerous “found elements” and typography, but the mash-up will focus on the “hand-made element”. I will personally take photographs of the settings or objects I cannot find online. If I cannot find or shoot the object, I will make it in Photoshop.

New Media Art

New Media art emerged during the Dada movement and from there artists reference it’s conceptual and aesthetic throughout the twentieth century. New Media art is a term used to emerge media technologies art together, such as, digital art, computer art, multimedia art and interactive art. It is consider New Media art when the artists redefine and modify the media into a creative piece of art. It’s the conceptual art New Media artist are trying to invest in the ideas more than the design.

The ideological approach for New Media artists is the collaboration with partners or groups. For instance, Brian Harvey and McKenzie Wark believes hackers to be an artist rather than a criminal. McKenzie Wark stated “in art, in science, philosophy and culture, in any production of knowledge where data can be gathered, where information can be extracted from it, and where in that information new possibilities for the world are produced, there are hackers hacking the new out of the old.”

New Media artist are experimenting with the new culture and technology and creating an advance and complicated side to it New Media art. I believe it will continue to strive because we as artist are constantly evolving. The methods artists use today are unpredictable and technology is advancing, so this can lead to a new movement.
