We, group 6 have decided to devote our time on Cory Archangel. He display his art work not only the basic drawing, music, performance, but also through creativity manipulation and strategy. Also, he is best known for video game modifying, and an artist who connects technology and culture as one.
Cory Arcangel is known for his subversive use of technology to create art. Not only does he re-use raw materials to create new art, he uses them in a manner in which transforms the regular into a vision of mass imagery and pushes the limitations of traditional artwork. “Significant in his practice are pieces like Super Mario Clouds v2k3 (2003), a hacked Super Mario Bros video game transformed into a series of wall projections that show an intense blue sky crossed by slowed down white clouds, an aesthetic reminiscent of Pop Art’s obsession with mass imagery. In another seminal work – I Shot Andy Warhol (2003) – he replaced the targets of a shooting game with Pope John Paul II, Flavor Flav and Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame) to let the player slip into the role of Valerie Solanas, the woman who tried to assassinate Warhol in 1968.”
Cory came to the art world through internet and computer based activities. His natural talents for creating digital worlds have evolved into creating artwork that allows him to explore his technologically inclined mind as well as his intense inclination for subversive art through technology.
Cory Arcangel hacked the Super Mario game and manipulated to bring forth the simplicity. He wants to show us that we are above technology and we should not let technology consume us. By hacking into the system and reprogramming the game, he changed the outcome of the game.
An interesting aspect of Cory’s life includes his diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer. This disease affected his concentration and memory greatly. He focused his energy during treatment on “hyper-structuralist” work. The cancer treatment wiped out his short-term memory for a period of time and he made work that he considered “void of real content”. In 2009 his lymph nodes were removed and he has beaten the disease as far as it seems.
In conclusion, Cory Archangel is a profound artist who wants to reconnect the human society with our culture roots and not let the advance technology to devour us.
